Seven Reasons Why You Should Never Talk to the Police

Don't Talk to the Police, 2012-05-20, Regent University School of Law, Prof. James Duane. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-7o9xYp7eE (Front 26 minutes)

In summary: The seven reasons why you should never talk to the police:

  1. It CANNOT help, because in the context of supporting your case, testimony can be dismissed as hearsay.
  2. Your statements can be taken as confessions, which become a part of the record. Confessions can be enough to convict.
  3. If there is any mistake, little lie, or inconsistency in your story, it will undermine your credibility, make you look like a liar, and call into question your innocence.
  4. Even if your story is perfectly true and consistent, you STILL may provide a piece of evidence that can be used to convict you in spite of your innocence.
  5. Even if you are innocent, only tell the truth, and don't say anything that might be incriminating (virtually impossible), your testimony might not be recorded or recalled with 100% accuracy and then can still be used to convict you.
  6. Even if you are innocent, only tell the truth, and don't say anything that might be incriminating (virtually impossible), AND your testimony is videotaped, your answers can STILL be used to convict if when the police don't recall their QUESTIONS with 100% accuracy.
  7. Even if you are innocent, only tell the truth, do not tell the police anything incriminating, and the entire interview is videotaped, your answers can still be used to convict you if the police end up with any evidence, even mistaken or unreliable evidence, that make any of your statements APPEAR false.
